Emotional De-escalation in the Classroom
Friday April 4, 2025 8:30am - 9:45am MDT
This is a skills-based workshop which will teach you how to help someone quickly de-escalate an overwhelming emotion to return to a more rational, flexible and receptive state of mind. This workshop is especially useful for teachers, parents, administrators, and front line workers who are confronted with the emotional dysregulation of others and aren't sure what to say or do to help the situation.

This workshop was developed by Dr. Adele Lafrance, who has a PhD in Child and Clinical Psychology and is codirector of Mental Health Foundations. After working for many years with Canadian school boards as a psychologist, Dr. Lafrance developed this quick and effective de-escalation tool for teachers in direct response to their classroom needs as well as their feelings of burnout. Dr. Lafrance, who is originally from Ontario but now resides in the United States, has delivered the workshop countless times to schools, parent groups and police officers. Sue is trained by Dr. Lafrance to deliver this workshop.

This workshop equips educators, school leaders, and student support staff with practical strategies to address social issues effectively, fostering a supportive and inclusive environment where students can thrive.

Central to this workshop is the concept of the collective belief of teachers in their ability to positively affect students, which serves as a foundation for driving meaningful change. Identify early warning signs of social issues affecting students.
Develop proactive intervention strategies to support students’ social and emotional needs.
Harness the power of collective teacher efficacy to create a unified and impactful support system.
Foster resilience, empathy, and a sense of belonging within the school community.
Measure and sustain positive outcomes through data-driven approaches and continuous reflection.
By the end of this workshop, participants will leave equipped with actionable tools and a deeper understanding of how to empower students to overcome challenges and achieve their fullest potential.

Planting the Seeds of Health Agency: Transforming Student Well-being Through Education
Friday April 4, 2025 8:30am - 9:45am MDT
The future of student health is alarming: 40% of today’s youth are predicted to develop chronic conditions like diabetes. For the first time, a generation is expected to have shorter lifespans and poorer quality of life than those before. This is the result of seeds of inaction sown today. However, educators have a powerful opportunity to reverse this trajectory by fostering health agency within their classrooms.

This presentation highlights the role of small, deliberate actions in transforming student health outcomes. While we can’t control home environments, the school environment is entirely within our reach. By acting now, educators can shape lifelong health behaviors and support well-being in profound ways.

Through the Healthy Habits Start Here® initiative, we:

1. Build active health agency into students’ lives through self-initiated, self-directed activities, improving both physical and mental well-being.
2. Fully support educators with curriculum-linked, ready-to-use resources that seamlessly integrate into classrooms.
3. Extend education into the home, enabling families to participate in activities that reinforce wellness habits and create meaningful change where it matters most.

Join us to explore the science, hear testimonials from educators, and discover how small actions today can create lasting health and well-being for generations to come.
